Welcome back to Kabul

Today was a lovely day in Kabul - with bright, warm sunshine glancing off the newly snow-covered mountains that seem to ring the city. It made a welcome change as last week we experienced lots of rain turning the city's side streets into rivers and the 'pavements' to muddy riverbanks.

I have been back in this city for 3 weeks, after an absence of a year. There are some noticeable differences, there are a few more glass covered buildings, a couple of top-class hotels (for all those people on donor-funded consultancies...) and a new shopping mall which includes Afghanistan's first escalator.

It is amazing how quickly the strange becomes the familiar. Today on my way to work we followed for a while a man on bicycle with a cow's head, tongue lolling out, strapped to the back. The first thought that crossed my mind was 'oh the poor cow', not the fact that a cow's head was travelling through the city strapped to a bicycle...

WOW! I love the image of riding around with a cows head. I'm really pleased for you, it sound exciting when compared to my own blog which would read: "same shit, different day"

Make sure you keep us up to date on all of your adventures.

It all sounds rather different from the Mile End road!

Welcome to the blogosphere Catherine - will add you to the roll of honour on my site. You don't seem to have password protection on comments - if you enable it, commenters see a code they have to enter in order to post - it's a really good idea in order to stop you being drowned in spam.

Saw a couple of cows heads myself while I was cycling in the Covent Garden area only yesterday. How can I get these home I remember wondering - thanks for the tip! Keep them coming -

Hey really liked the image of the cows head - guess its what can give us a greater picture of what every day life is like out there! I haven't seen an escalator for a while either but thats just from being a hermit in sunny south wales!

Hi Catherine,

Good to hear that you are thriving. I hope that this message comes through as everthing here is 'helpfully' translated automatically into German.

I hope that the cow's head was not on its way to make the stock base for you next rice meal...

Best wishes,

Jennifer.

Yes but Catherine, was the head that of a Jersy, Hereford or what? And, more importantly, is this what goes for a nodding-dog in Kabul? Oh Yes.

Dan P - I think you're delusional, you cycling in Covent Garden?? Your work must be tipping you over the edge...or perhaps it is the sleepless nights of a new dad?

Alice, well... it was a brown cow, which is as far as I can go with its identification (given the fact that there was just the head to go on). I bet it had a harder life than those in Ambridge... and then in death to travel in such way.

And Jennifer, I hope no part of a cow goes into any meal of mine. But ... you raise an interesting point what does one do with a cow's head??
